Product Description An absorbing, entertaining diet memoir with humor, empathy, and yoga. Meet your new best yoga-and-healthy-eating friend in this smart, accessible, and funny memoir of dieting and discovery. For years, Jessica struggled with fluctuating weight and bouts of unhappiness. Like many of us, she found comfort in food and craved cigarettes and self-confidence. Then one day Jessica took her first yoga class in Katmandu. She lost 40 pounds and changed her life forever. In enLIGHTened, Jessica shares the core principles of yoga philosophy—not the poses and postures, but the ancient system of ideas that lies behind them, drawn from a 2000-year-old text called the Yoga Sutras. The inspiration for this memoir-driven diet and health book is studied by devout yoga students and teachers, and offers answers to eating smartly, living right, and losing weight. Jessica goes beyond yoga's merge into mainstream—beyond trendy diets, unsustainable exercise routines, and the quest for the perfect figure. Using spiritual philosophy, and personal stories everyone can relate to, she sets the reader on a journey to self-acceptance, personal peace, and long-term health. .

Amazing book AND author! June 10, 2010 Tracy Debellis (Vienna, VA) enLIGHTened is a wonderful book by an amazing author! I have been reading Jessica's writing (articles, blogs, etc.) for years and am a huge fan so I was thrilled when this book came out. As a new mom, I had very little time to get engrossed in a book but I knew this would be worth it and I was not disappointed at all. Jessica writes from a very real and personal space and I find that I deeply connect with her words and experiences. As a long time yoga practitioner and teacher, I found the book especially appealing but, truly, one need not practice yoga to enjoy this book and get something out of it. Since I first read one of Jessica's pieces in 2005, I have found that I have been encouraged, amused, and healed by her words. I read enLIGHTened when it first came out and am looking at it on my nightstand now as I am about to reread it -- I need a touch of inspiration these days!
Best weight loss journey book I've read May 12, 2010 J. Curran (Little Rock, Ark.) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been reading weight loss books for motivation non-stop for over nine months, first how-to/info and story/journey books moreso lately. This is by far the best of the latter. She's like a wise friend who has been there, done that. Reading the book felt like a great, long talk marathon with a soul mate, except she's conquered her food issues for good and has a ton of great advice. Very well-written, honest, warm. Made me wish I lived in Vancouver and could take her class and go have a hot tea with her afterwards.
I'm not sure why this one got in deeper than "French Women," "Skinny Bitch," "Dietgirl," and "My Big Fat Greek Diet" but it did. Maybe the yoga, which I've always wanted to try and am about to start in a couple of weeks. I think I could identify more with Jessica because of her troubles with her parents, husband in academia, and not being extremely overweight. She's just a great writer who writes very honestly about a very personal and fraught topic. Great recipes too. I got this book originally from the library but have now bought it so it's at my fingertips all the time. Can't recommend it highly enough.
well written inspiring guide May 3, 2010 Jenny R 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I first came across the author when I read her anthology on miscarriage. As soon as I saw she was out with a new book, I bought in on the spot. I loved the mix of personal story w/ practical advice on yoga and cooking. enLIGHTened is inspiring, and it will help direct readers to a healthier lifestyle. Looking forward to the next book.
Very good! May 1, 2010 Ana Lucia M. Pos (New Zealand) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Hi, everyone
I purchased this book because I related to the cover: losing weight, yoga and pineaple :)
Well, the book is much more than this. Jessica is very honest and tells her life story and how she came to enlighten her life, facing her personal / family issues. The book also talks about discipline somehow but mainly about living our true selves. And thats what yoga is all about, living your true self because YOU are the most important person under the sun. I really like when she describes the time she spent in Nepal and all the freedom she felt which led up to weight loss and emotional balance.
This is a very significant book and, as you go through the pages, you cant help but look back upon your own life.
I feel lucky I found the book, completely out of the blue - I was just browsing Amazon.com products.
This is a great book!
Delicious! April 30, 2010 Suzan Colon 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Jessica Berger Gross occupies that rare space on the bookshelf of writers I want to become and befriend. She can be both funny and very honest about her journey, and her plan for becoming the best and truest version of herself was inspiring. And doable! I mean, who wouldn't want to take a nice long walk, try some yoga, and eat fresh, healthy food? It's a relatable memoir with a sane plan that I'll enjoy reading again and again.
